"After fasting in Ramadan, it is time for us to thoroughly purify ourselves in terms of intellectuality, spirituality, environment, and material," he remarked in his capacity as secretary of the Muhammadiyah Central Board in Kudus District, Central Java.
Muhammadiyah has set March 20 as Day 1 of Shawwal 1447 Hijri, marking Eid al-Fitr in 2026, while the government officially declared the holy day to fall on March 21.
Mu'ti began the sermon by introducing a concept he called "material purity," stressing the importance of Muslims strictly resorting to halal and lawful ways in acquiring and using wealth. He urged the community to avoid corrupt practices and a lavish lifestyle.
"The month of fasting has taught us to exercise self-restraint. Afterward, we need to be able to live in modesty, avoid extravagance, and do our best for ourselves, society, the nation, and the environment," he stated.
Endorsing "intellectual purity," the minister said that after Ramadan, Muslims should make greater efforts to curb negative thoughts and nurture a clean mind while also deepening faith and their relationship with God under the concept he described as "spiritual purity."
Finally, Mu'ti underlined that post-Ramadan purification must also extend to caring for the living environment. He called on the people to maintain cleanliness and avoid practices that could undermine environmental sustainability.
He further said that Eid alFitr celebrations should be regarded as momentum for all to make self-improvements and renew commitment to contributing to society, including by fighting for unity and harmony, which he views as "important capital to transform Indonesia into a developed, dignified country."
Additionally, the minister alluded to escalating global security concerns, urging conflicting parties to exercise restraint and put an end to violence.
