Wamena, Highland Papua (ANTARA) -
Indonesia's Forestry Ministry has expressed hope that the Highland Papua Province will serve as a stronghold of tropical forests for the country and the world in tackling greenhouse gas emissions.

Forestry Minister’s Expert Staff for Climate Change Haruni Krinawati here on Thursday said the condition of forests in Papua Highlands remains relatively well preserved, referring to a presentation delivered by Acting Regional Secretary Wasuok D Siep.

“More than 80 percent of the forests are still well maintained. We hope Papua Highlands will become a province that serves as a stronghold in safeguarding our tropical forests,” she said.

With the direct involvement of the Highland Papua provincial government and eight district administrations, she said, development acceleration that prioritizes ecological, economic, and social aspects can be maintained in the region.

“We expect that every development effort in Highland Papua will continue to preserve ecological, economic, and social balance, so that forests remain well protected, development accelerates, and communities can live in prosperity,” Krinawati remarked.

She explained that once the sub-national work plan for Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 is established, Highland Papua can become a champion in sustainable forest management and attract support from national and international partners.

“With the work plan in place, support from the central government and international stakeholders will come to Highland Papua to strengthen better forest management in the future,” she added.

She noted that Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 is crucial for linking Indonesia’s national commitments to the global climate agenda with local needs in Papua Highlands.

“We know the forestry sector is a key factor in supporting Indonesia’s emissions reduction program. Nearly 60 percent of the greenhouse gas reduction target relies on the FOLU sector,” she noted.
