Medan, North Sumatra (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Communication and Digital enhanced the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-based technology as a form of commitment to combating online gambling sites in Indonesia.

"We remain committed to seeking and using technology developed by the nation's youth," Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid said in Medan on Wednesday.

To date, her ministry has blocked access to approximately 3.2 million online gambling sites and continues to strengthen eradication efforts.

"Basically, the content continues to replicate. That's what we found in the Hayam Wuruk case," Hafid stated.

She noted that the international online gambling network currently revealed at Hayam Wuruk Plaza Tower, Jakarta, continues to camouflage itself to avoid detection.

"One site can grow to 75 sites and continue to camouflage itself to avoid detection by crawlers. However, that is no reason for us to continue updating our technology," the minister emphasized.

Crawling refers to an automated process used by search engines or web bots to systematically scan and index web pages.

Hafid said the ministry is accelerating technological improvements in its efforts to remove online gambling content.

She added that enforcement through site takedowns will not be effective without stronger public awareness.

A takedown refers to the removal or blocking of access to digital content such as websites, images, or articles on online platforms.

She stressed the importance of public participation, including within households, in combating online gambling through non-technological approaches.

In addition, other stakeholders such as the police, the Financial Services Authority (OJK), banks, and social media platforms also play a role in monitoring and removing online gambling advertisements.

Recently, Indonesian police dismantled an international online gambling network operating at Hayam Wuruk in Jakarta on May 9. Authorities arrested individuals operating online gambling platforms, involving 320 foreign nationals, including 57 Chinese, 228 Vietnamese, 11 Laotians, 13 Myanmar nationals, three Malaysians, three Cambodians, and five Thais.

According to police, the operation was highly structured, using electronic systems and organized cross-border digital networks.
