Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - Rice prices at a number of traditional markets in Yogyakarta have begun to drop following several weeks of market operations by the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) until the end of December 2010.

A total of 50 tons of rice provided by Bulog`s Yogyakarta branch through its market operations to control fluctuating prices until December 28, 2010, 38 tons of which had been absorbed by consumers.

"IR-2 medium quality rice which was previously sold at the price of Rp7,175 per kilogram has dropped to Rp6,300 per kilogram since early January 2011," local department of trade, industry, cooperatives, and agriculture spokesperson Prabaningtyas said here on Tuesday.

She said the rice from Bulog during the market operations was sold at eight traditional markets in Yogyakarta, namely Lempuyangan, Prawirotaman, Kranggan, Beringharjo, Demangan, Terban, Sentul, and Serangan.

"We will continue to monitor rice price developments at those traditional markets, and if we find out that the prices are still high we will coordinate it with the provincial government and Bulog," Prabaningtyas said.

She said that besides rice, other commodities such as curly red chili also experienced a price downturn from Rp57,000 per kilogram to Rp50,000 per kilogram, but the price of small red chili had again edged up from Rp60,000 per kilogram to Rp75,000 per kilogram.
