Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Gerindra (Greater Indonesia Movement) Party faction in the House of Representatives (DPR) has rejected a plan to construct a new building for the legislature arguing it would only be a waste of public funds and hurt the people`s sense of propriety.

"Our faction in the House has firmly rejected the plan to construct a new building. We have submitted an official letter on the matter to the House leadership," said Fadli Zon, deputy chairperson of the Gerindra Party at a press conference at the DPR building here on Tuesday.

Fadli said the House speaker and deputy speaker were lying when they said that all factions in the House had agreed to have a new building as the Gerindra faction had rejected it openly.

Gerindra had urged that the funds allocated for the project be instead used to carry out other programs that could improve the people`s welfare.

"The plan is felt as not urgent and which is needed to be immediately realized. It would be better if the performance of the House which gets priority than just this sort of thing," he said.

Zon pointed out should the plan be carried out then the image of the House members would just get even worse as their image have been disappointing and keep wasting state budget just for a building.

The government has obtained the estimated cost for the building of the new building at the cost of 1.16 trillion rupiahs. The plan has earlier sparked widespread uproar considering the people`s current economic conditions. (*)
