"The One-million-tree planting drive as part of the `Kaltim Green` policy is quite effective to reduce green house gas and carbon emission," the minister said here on Saturday.
The minister expressed optimism the target of the national green house gas emission reduction drive will be reached because in 2010 alone more than one billion trees were planted.
He said it exceeded the government`s target of planting one billion trees per year.
"One man, one tree was the government`s earlier policy but now it becomes `one man, five trees` because tree planting activity can reduce green house gas emission by around 14 percent," Gusti Muhammad Hatta said.
But he added that besides tree planting activity, the use of environmentally-friendly energy and energy efficiency could also reduce the green house gas emission.
Meanwhile, East Kalimantan Governor Awang Faroek in his written address read out by Tarakan Mayor Udin Hianggio said that through the "Kaltim Green" activity, the province was determined to maintain environmental sustainability in its bid to deduce green house gas emission by 26 percent through environmentally-oriented governance.
"Kaltim Green activity is in line with central government commitment," the governor said, adding that his party has planted around 4 million tress in one year. (*)
