Boyolali, C Java (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) continues to help overcome clean water supply shortages affecting villagers living on the slopes of Mount Merapi due to cold lava floods, a spokesman said.

Tens of PMI volunteers had been deployed to supply clean water to residents of remote villages on the slope of Mount Merapi, such as Tlogolele in Selo subdistrict, Hartono, chief of the PMI`s branch in Boyolali district, said here on Sunday.

"We are supplying clean water to residents of villages which are difficult to reach," he said.

The activity targeted villages located 5 to 15 km from the volcano`s peak, including Suroteleng, Lencoh, Jrakah, Klakah, and Tlogolele in Selo subdistrict, and Wonodoyo, Jombong, and Gedangan in Cepogo subdistrict, and Sangup, Mriyan and Cluntang in Musuk subdistrict, he said.

Citing an example, he said PMI currently equipped Cluntang village in Musuk subdistrict with 747 water bladders with a capacity of 320 liters each.

In addition, PMI in cooperation with the Magelang district administration also installed a water tank with a capacity of 10 thousand liters at the village, he said.

The cold lava floods had paralyzed access roads of certain parts of Boyolali district.

The floods had ever disrupted the access roads linking Jarak Kidul hamlet and Sepi hamlet in Jrakah village, Selo subdistrict, recently.

Last December, Mount Merapi`s cold lava floods also paralyzed access roads to Tlogolele village.

Mount Merapi had erupted repeatedly in the past two or three weeks but its most fatal eruptions occurred on Oct 26 and Nov 5.

As a result of the eruptions, at least 259 people had perished and many others sustained serious burns and became displaced. (*)
