Tehran (ANTARA News/Xinhua) - Iran`s Majlis (Parliament) has thrown its weight behind the "revolution in Egypt" as protesters continue to force President Hosni Mubarak to step down, the English language satellite Press TV reported, Wednesday.

Some 214 legislators in a statement on Tuesday backed the Egyptian revolution, citing the ongoing move in the North African state as a holy uprising and a historic awareness, said the report.

"Today, the Muslim Egyptians` uprising has turned this country into the center of Middle East developments and the world freedom- seekers ... the Islamic nations are anticipating the results of this holy revolution," the statement was quoted as saying.

The Iranian lawmakers described Iran`s support for the Egyptian revolution as a spiritual support, according to the report.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi said Monday that Iran supports protesting movement of Egyptian great nation, according to the local ISNA news agency.

"Popular protests and movements in North African countries including in Egypt show necessity of an overhaul in the region and putting an end to dictatorial rules," said Salehi.

"Tunisian and Egyptian nations proved that the era of engineering and controlling the region by the world arrogance is over and that people are trying to decide about their fate," he was quoted as saying.

Salehi criticized the U.S. direct meddling in Egyptian developments.

Meanwhile, he said that "Egyptian brothers and sisters showed that they will not continue to tolerate Zionist regime`s crimes."

On Wednesday, the massive protests against Hosni Mubarak entered its second week as he said on Tuesday that he would step down after the country`s elections in September. Many protesters insisted on his immediate exit.(*)
