Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA News) - A magnitude-6.6 earthquake jolted Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province, on Friday at 00.08 am local time.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicenter of the earthquake was located 7.12 degrees southern latitude and 116.85 degrees northern longitude, or about 165 kilometers northwest of Sumbawa Besar, Sumbawa district, NTB.

The quake`s center was at a depth of 523 kilometers below the sea surface and did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

There was no immediate reports of casualties or material damages, but the temblor caused people to awaken from their sleeps.

In Mataram city, the earthquake was three to four modified merchalli intensity (MMI).

Mashur, a local resident, said he was shocked with the strong quake and ran out of his house.

"I was with my wife and children when the quake struck. We tried to run, but we found difficulty when opening the door because we were afraid of aftershocks," he said.
