Banjarbaru, S Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - Environment Minister Gusti Muhammad Hatta said the government has targeted to slash national garbage production by 7 percent per year.

"We have set ourselves the target of reducing national garbage production by 7 percent per annum," he said when inaugurating a waste treatment unit owned by a tofu maker Sumber Indah here on Tuesday.

However, the target would not be achieved without the public`s support, he said.

The first step to achieve the target was changing the public`s mindset. "We must change their mindset, namely how to manage garbage. Not all items they dispose of are of no use. On the contrary, they can be used to produce fertilizer or other items," he said.

The other step was setting up the so-called "garbage banks" which would accommodate and process garbage into valuable things, he said.

Such garbage banks could now be found in a number of cities including Yogyakarta where the private company, along with the public currently was running a total of 60 garbage banks, he said.

"We want each region including South Kalimantan to have garbage banks so garbage can be processed into useful thing," he said.(*)
