Washington (ANTARA News/AFP) - President Barack Obama will welcome the Qatari emir to Washington for talks this week, a White House spokesman said Sunday.

"President Obama will welcome to the White House the Amir of Qatar, His Highness Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, on Thursday, April 14, 2011," the statement said.

Obama "looks forward to discussing a range of issues with the Amir, including the recent developments in the Middle East and Qatar`s leadership in the international effort to protect Libyan civilians," the statement added.

Qatar was the only Arab state to participate in military operations in Libya despite the Arab League`s support for a no-fly zone to prevent Moamer Kadhafi from harming civilians.

In a telephone conversation with the emir last month, Obama said the deployment showed Qatar`s leadership role in the region.

The international contact group on Libya, set up at the March 29 international conference in London, is meanwhile is set to take place this week in the Qatari capital Doha, charged with "ensuring the political governance of the military intervention and the implementation of UN resolutions" in Libya.
