Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Amidan said the council would not issue an edict (fatwa) declaring as illegal radicalism in Indonesia such as allegedly done by the Indonesia Islamic State (NII) movement.

"MUI will not issue a haram (baned by religion) fatwa for the NII movement," Amidan said during a discussion on religious radicalism here on Thursday.

He said that radicalism in Indonesia was clearly against the law and religion so that there was no need to issue a fatwa because it was already clear that it was haram.

Amidan said that the MUI established a fatwa on matters whose legal status was not clear, so that a fatwa was needed to make it clear.

Radicalism movement in Indonesia, he said, clearly ran counter to religion and the law.

He said that there was a request for MUI to issue a haram fatwa during an interactive dialog on a private TV station program on Thursday.
