Ambon, Maluku (ANTARA News) - Bank Indonesia (BI/the central bank) will reduce the printing of bank notes in the Rp1,000 denomination as part of its effort to popularize coin money in the Rp1,000 denomination, a BI official said.

"We will popularize coin money in Rp1,000 denomination because the circulation of bank notes of Rp1,000 would be reduced," Bank Indonesia Deputy Director for Ambon Raden Kuncoro said here on Friday.

He said that BI would remain to print bank notes of Rp1,000 but only in small volumes to meet the need for small bank note changes during (religious) holidays.

"After the people could already accept the coin money in the Rp1,000 denomination, the bank notes would begin to be reduced in stages and in one time the smallest denomination of bank notes would only be Rp2,000," he said.
