Banjarnegara, C Java (ANTARA News) - The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has added eight gas monitoring devices in the vicinity of the Timbang crater on Mount Dieng in Batur sub district, Banjarnegara district, Central Java, a spokesman said.

"The devices are to detect the distribution of gas and we will intsall them at eight points within a radius of 1.5 kilometers from Timbang crater," said Umar Rosadi, head of the PVMBG`s Mount Dieng Emergency Response Team, said here Wednesday.

He said, the eight new devices would be put in place on a non-permanent basis in addition to another that had been installed on a permanent basis.

Thus, currently there would be nine gas monitoring devices around the Timbang crater.

As for the concentration of CO2 gas released from Timbang crater, Umar said, it was still volatile.

"Based on the observation this morning, the maximum CO2 concentration recorded 1.27 percent in volume and a one-time volcanic earthquake. Yesterday (Tuesday, ed.) CO2 concentration of 1.07 percent volume recorded maximum," Umar explained.

Therefore, the local people are encouraged to follow the recommendations of PVMBG, namely not be in the radius of one kilometer from Timbang crater.(*)
