Semarang, C Java (ANTARA News) - First Lady Ani Yudhoyono arrived here Tuesday morning to inaugurate the newly renovated Lawang Sewu building, an historical landmark in Semerang.

She and her entourage consisting of among others Herawati Boediono, Women`s Empowerment and Child Protection Linda Agum Gumelar, and Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, landed at Ahmad Yani International Airport after flying for one hour from Jakarta.

Upon arrival in Semarang, the first lady and her entourage immediately proceeded to Lawang Sewu for the inauguration ceremony.

Apart from inaugurating the old building, Ani Yudhoyono is also scheduled to visit a handicraft exhibition organized coinciding with the Lawang Sewu inauguration ceremony.

Lawang Sewu (which means "Thousand Doors") was built during the Dutch colonial era.

It will become a main tourist attraction for the Central Java Visit Year 2013.

"The cultural heritage will become an icon of Semarang City, and even Central Java Province," Central Java Governor Bibit Waluyo said recently.

The governor had previously mobilized tens of soldiers to help accelerate the renovation of Lawang Sewu, a famous landmark in Semarang.

The soldiers had helped rearrange the environment around Lawang Sewu, the governor said when inspecting the renovation work at Lawang Sewu, recently.

The handicraft exhibition is being held from July 5 to 10, 2011.
