Manado, North Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - The status of Mount Lokon in Tomohon, North Sulawesi, is still at the highest alert level as its activity is still intense, the Head of the Geological, Vulcanological Disaster Mitigation Center, Surono, said.

"The mountain`s volcanic activity is still very high and therefore the status of Mt Lokon is still at the highest level," he said here on Thursday.

Surono said the evaluation was done when there was a rise in the volcano`s activity with its volcanic ashes drifting westward.

No indications of hot clouds were found nor spewing of burning lava that had once occurred 2.5 kilometers from the Tamboluan crater followed by thick ash rain as far as three kilometers from the center of the eruptions.

"Because of the high danger level, people`s activities within a radius of three kilometers from the Tomboluan crater are banned. Those living outside the radius could conduct activities again as before," Surono said.

"But in case the threat spreads the stipulation will be reviewed," he added.

Following its eruptions recently at least 5,369 people in Kinilow and Kinilow I and Kakaskasen I have been evacuated to around 23 evacuation centers.(*)
