Banda Aceh (ANTARA News) - Public Works Minister Joko Kirmanto said up to 60 percent of Indonesia`s 5.7 million workers are unskilled and therefore the government was planning to train them in various skills.

"Currently, we are facing the limited competitiveness and quality of human resources in the construction field," he said when inaugurating a workshop on building construction at the campus of Syiah Kuala university here on Tuesday.

The workers` limited skills should not be a discouraging or weakening factor but become a challenge to continue to train them and realize the ideals of the nation.

According to the minister, Indonesia is often invited by other countries to participate in construction projects abroad but because it did not have enough skilled human resources, the country was unable to meet the invitations.

"Overseas construction projects in which Indonesia had ever been invited to take part were among others in the Middle East, South Africa, Algeria, United Arab Emirates, Qatar," the minister said.

In an effort to make the country`s workers more skilled , he said, the government would conduct a reorientation of its construction workers towards greater efficiency, effectiveness and productivity.

"Structuring rules, transparency and coaching are needed to create more competitive human resources," he said.

Thus, the minister said preparing more skilled workers as a main factor to create the national construction transformation was already agreed for 2011 - 2030 period.

"This ideal has become our common commitment in creating the changes in the field of comfort and quality construction. God willing, with the support of all parties, what we aspire to will come true," Joko Kirmanto said.
