The honorary title was given to King Abdullah for his contributions to efforts to develop Saudi Arabia as a center of moderate Islamic culture.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The University of Indonesia (UI) has awarded an honorary title to Saudi Arabia`s King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz at a ceremony at the Al-Safa Palace, Makkah, last Sunday.

According to a press release from the Indonesian Embassy in Jeddah received here on Monday, the honorary title was directly presented by UI Rector Prof Dr Soz Gumilar Rusliwa Somantri to King Abdullah.

The honorary title was given to King Abdullah for his contributions to efforts to develop Saudi Arabia as a center of moderate Islamic culture. The king was also praised for his support for the realization of Palestinian independence and his efforts to promote inter-religion dialogue to create world peace.

"UI also expressed appreciation for King Abdullah`s role in promoting humanitarianism and development of technology," said the press release.

The Sunday ceremony was attended by international ulema, some ministers, chief of higher board and governors of provinces in Saudi Arabia.

Also present at the event were Indonesian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Gatot Abdullah Mansyur, presidential envoy for the middle east Prof Alwi Shihab, Indonesian consul general in Jeddah Zakaria Anshar and some UI professors.(*)
