Semarang, C Java (ANTARA News) - A general hospital at Jalan Ketileng Indah, Semarang, Central Java, caught fire on Sunday.

There were no fatalities nor injuries in the fire which broke out at the outpatient registration room on the first floor, and at the medical recording room on the second floor.

Danang (28), a security officer of the hospital said the fire broke out at 3.15 pm local time at the outpatient registration room which was empty at that time.

"As soon as I and some of the other security personnel smelt the smoke, tried to put out the flames with anything we can grab, but of no avail," he said.

The fire which grew rapidly also reached the medical recording room on the second floor.

At least nine fire engines and scores if firemen of the Semarang city fire brigade were in the fire location trying to put out the flames.

The firemen did their best to prevent the flames from spreading to the inpatient hall.

In less than two hours, the flames had been put out by the firemen.

Several South Semarang policemen had immediately started investigations of the fire location trying to find the cause of the mishap which had caused hundreds of millions of rupiah in material loss.

Semarang Mayor Soemarmo who was also inspecting the location had asked for uninterrupted treatment of the patients.

The fire at the Semarang city-owned hospital had also caused intensive local traffic jams caused by hundreds of people watching the fire from close quarters. (*)
