Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has signed a decree dismissing former Democrat Party treasurer M Nazaruddin as a member of the House of Representatives (DPR RI).

The presidential decree on Nazaruddin`s discharge was signed on September 6, 2011, Julian Aldrin Pasha, a presidential spokesman, said here on Wednesday.

"The presidential decree on Nazaruddin`s dismissal was signed by the President on September 6, 2011. Surely it has already been sent to the leadership of DPR RI," Julian said.

On August 25, 2011, the DPR RI leadership sent a letter to President Yudhoyono requesting the discharge of M Nazaruddin as a DPR RI member after his arrest in a corruption case.

Nazar has been accused of having accepted bribe money in a project from the government to build an athletes` dormitory for the upcoming SEA Games event in Palembang, South Sumatra.

After being on the run in three continents for about 75 days, Nazaruddin was finally caught in Cartagena, a small town located over 600 km from Bogota, Colombia, South America, on Sunday (August 7, 2011), by local police who suspected him of using a forged passport.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said on Thursday (Aug 11) he had instructed the National Police Chief to ensure the safety of M Nazaruddin as there might be people who were unhappy about his return.

"I want to remind the Police chief, please ensure his safety. Safety, and once again, safety because there might be people who feel uncomfortable with his return to Indonesia ," the head of state said.

The ruling Democrat Party chairman, Anas Urbaningrum, said he was optimistic Nazaruddin`s case as well as other cases would not have a bad effect on the party in the 2014 general elections and local polls.

"The present storm and tests are God`s blessings that will make the party stronger," he said after installing the Riau Islands Democrat Party regional board in Batam, Riau Island, recently.
