Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Jakarta city administration is planning to build subsidized flats in the densely-populated Tambora area in West Jakarta where fires often occur.

West Jakarta Mayor Burhanudin said here on Friday before implementing the plan, the local authorities would allow hundreds of families who had lost their houses to the recent fire in Angke, Tambora subdistrict, West Jakarta, to rebuild their houses.

"We look at the problem from a humanitarian point of view. They are still recognized (as West Jakarta residents). It will not be a problem if they rebuild their houses in Angke," he said.

The houses would be temporary because the Jakarta administration would in the future build flats in the area, he said.

"But this is a long-term plan. The plan cannot yet be realized because it still requires an in-depth study," he said.

Tambora subdistrict head Isnawa Adji said he would allow the Angke residents to rebuild their houses. "If they are banned from rebuilding their houses, where they will live," he said.

He added however that the houses must have standard electrical installations because most of the fires that had happened in the area were caused by short circuits.

"We ask the residents to build their houses with safe electrical installations to prevent fires," he said.

To ensure that the houses would have safe electrical installations the local authorities would check each of the houses, he said.

The measure was necessary to keep down the number of fires caused by short circuits, he said.
