Ambon, Maluku (ANTARA News) - The military and police here are now routinely conducting security checks on people arriving at Ambon`s Pattimura airport and Yos Sudarso seaport in an effort to keep Maluku`s provincial capital free from undesired elements.

"We carry out the routine security checks to weed out people who come to Ambon without any clear goal," Maluku Police Chief Brig. Gen. Syarief Gunawan said here on Tuesday.

Syarief said the regular checks on people who came to Ambon were done to ensure security so that it remained conducive after the September 11 communal clash in the city.

According to him, the regular supervision was conducted to deter outsiders suspected of wanting to disrupt the already conducive security situation in Ambon.

"In cooperation with the National Defense Forces (TNI) personnel, we carry out the routine checks by the order of Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto who visited Ambon with National Police Chief Gen Timur Pradopo last Thursday," Syarief Gunawan said.

He asserted that the checks were conducted not only at Pattimura airport and Yos Sudarso seaport but they would also be done in all parts of Maluku and every corner of Ambon city in the days ahead.

"Our primary objective is to keep Ambon and other areas in Maluku free from people who intend to disturb the harmonious bonds of brotherhood among members of the local community," he said.

When visiting Ambon on Thursday, September 15, 2001, Security Minister Djoko Suyanto asserted that the central government would continue to bar outsiders with unclear objective from entering Ambon.

"We will continue to coordinate with security personnel in every region in Java and other provinces to remain on guard against people intending to travel to Ambon with for dubious purposes," Djoko said.
