United Nations (ANTARA News/Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hailed as an "important step" on Thursday an announcement by Saudi Arabia that women would be allowed to vote and stand in elections in the conservative kingdom.

The U.N. chief seldom comments on internal legislation in countries, but has billed women`s rights as a major theme of his tenure.

"The Secretary-General believes that these (announcements) represent an important step in the realization by women in Saudi Arabia of their fundamental civil and political rights," said a statement issued by Ban`s press office.

Saudi Arabian King Abdullah`s announcement on Sunday was seen as a bold shift by the absolute monarchy as pressure for social and and democratic reform sweeps the Middle East. Women will also be permitted to join the unelected advisory Shura Council, which vets legislation but has no binding powers.

The measure, however, will do little to change how the country is run. Saudi Arabia`s rulers allow elections only for half of the seats on municipal councils, which have few powers.

Only men will vote at the next elections, which will take place next week; women will be allowed to vote in 2015. (*)
