Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia welcomes the Myanmar government`s commitment to release thousands of prisoners in the country, Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa said here on Wednesday.

"This is significant progress and in line with Indonesia`s hope to see the principles of democracy implemented more consistently in Myanmar," said the minister on the sidelines of a meeting with members of the House of Representatives.

However, he also said the implementation of Myanmar government`s commitment must be continuously monitored.

"I will visit Myanmar next October 28 to observe the progress there," Marty said.

Last Tuesday (Oct 11), Myanmar state television announced that the government would grant amnesty to 6,359 prisoners on Wednesday. However, it was not clear whether the amnesty also applied to political prisoners.
