London (ANTARA News) - Amnesty International (AI) has sent an open letter to Indonesia`s home affairs minister to convey its concern over threats and intimidations against Ahmadiyah followers by certain religious groups and organizations as well as officials in West Java.

The letter signed by AI deputy director for Asia-Pacific Donna Guest was received by ANTARA News here on Saturday.

Copies of the letter were also sent to national police chief General Timur Pradopo, minister of law and human rights Patrialis Akbar, minister of religious affairs Suryadharma Ali, West Java governor Ahmad Heryawan, chief of the National Commission on Human Rights, Ifdhal Kasim.

The letter was sent in connection with attacks on properties of Ahmadiyah followers and closure or taking over of Ahmadiyah houses of prayer.

It said in several cases the government has even actively taken part in the action as proven a regulation issued by the governor of West Java banning Ahmadiyah activities in the region providing reasons for attackers to legitimize their action.

AI has appealed to the Indonesian government to investigate the cases to prevent them from happening again in the future.

It said Indonesia must abide by the international law that protects freedom of religion for all and communities in the country.

It said the obligation was contained in the International Convenant on Civilian and Political Rights (ICCPR) to which Indonesia is a party.
