Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA News) - Publicly-listed telecommunication company PT Bakrie Telecom Tbk plans to organize an international conference on the global telecommunication industry`s contribution to reduction of carbon emissions.

"No less than 250 representatives of global telecommunication industries, regulators and associations will share knowledge and experiences at the conference," PT Bakrie Telecom Tbk (BTEL) President Director Anindya N Bakrie said in a press statement on Monday.

Dubbed "ICT for Green Asia", the conference will take place at Hotel Mandarin Oriental in Jakarta on Tuesday.

In addition to a number of United Indonesia Cabinet ministers, he said International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Director Malcolm Jhonson would also address the conference. ITU is an institute under the aegis of the UN to handle the telecommunication sector.

The other speaker would be Luis Neves, chairman of Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) which is one of the most influential environmental protection organizations in the global information and technology industry, he said.

The conference would also feature Chief of the Australian Information Industries Association Graeme Phillipson, he said.

He said among representatives of international private companies that had confirmed a plan to take part in the one-day conference were Director of Corporate Social Responsibility Research in Motion John Smiciklas, Managing Director for Asia Pacific and Convergys Benjamin Hart, and Vice President of Research and Development of Marvell Technologies Gani Jusuf.

"It is very often for the public to think that the telecommunication industry has nothing to do with reduction of carbon emissions. But in reality the telecommunication industry contributes 2-3 percent of carbon emissions," he said.

Therefore, reduction of carbon emissions should become environment-based business strategy which would affect the continuity of relevant telecommunication companies, he said.

The conference would produce a variety of environment-based business strategy approaches in the telecommunication sector that would have an impact on sustainable development in Asia, he said.

"We hope Indonesian telecommunication companies and environmental observers alike would attend the conference "ICT Green for Asia. Environmental awareness will not only give social benefit but also positive contributions to their performance,"he said. (*)
