Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale jolted northeast of Nabire, Papua Province, on Saturday at 6.14 am local time.

The temblor`s epicenter was located at 3.08 degrees northern latitude and 135.87 eastern longitude, at a depth of 13 km, and around 51 km northeast of Nabire, according to information from the Jayapura`s Area V meteorological, climatology and geophysics agency.

Last Tuesday (Dec 13), Nabire was also shaken by an earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter Scale.

The quake`s epicenter was 17 km southeast of Nabire, 3.45 degrees southern latitude and 135.63 degrees eastern longitude, and at a depth of 10 km.

Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

In 2004, a powerful earthquake and a deadly subsequent tsunami devastated Aceh and Nias Island, killing over 200,000 people and rendering around one million others homeless.
