Jakarta (ANTARA News) - State logistics board (Bulog) intends to supply 3.7 million to 4 million tons of rice next year.

Of the total, 3.5 million to 3.6 million tons of rice would originate from local rice and 500 thousand tons from this year`s imported rice carry over, Bulog President Director Sutarto Alimoeso said here on Sunday.

"We will prioritize domestic supplies. If the supplies fall short of the target we will import rice," he said.

He said if the dry unhusked rice production target of 74 million for 2011 which represented a 12 percent increase compared to the year before could be achieved the country did not need to import rice next year.

Under the optimistic scenario, 3.5 million of the rice production for 2012 consumption would originate from local farmers if the rice production increased 13 percent.(*)
