Jakarta (ANTARA News) - National Defense Forces (TNI) Chief Admiral Agus Suhartono said the military was ready to help police secure the situation in Aceh in the wake of the recent mysterious shooting incidents which killed a number of people.

"We are always ready to back up the police whenever they need our help," Agus said at the Presidential Office here on Tuesday.

He said both the military and police were always ready to take anticipatory measures to secure the situation in Aceh.

"Admittedly, police have anticipated a number of shooting cases (in Aceh) and the TNI has so far helped police," he said.

Three people were shot dead while working on telecommunications company PT Telkomsel fiber optic cables in Bireun district, Aceh, on December 31 last year.

Earlier, on December 29 last year, the Aceh provincial police arrested two people for allegedly being involved in a shooting case in North Aceh district, on December 4, 2011. Three people were killed in the shooting.

Asked about a gubernatorial election to be held in Aceh soon, Agus said the TNI still had no plan to reinforce its personnel in the province adding the number of military personnel there was still adequate.

"As Aceh is a special region we must be careful in deploying personnel in the province," he said.
