"We are not going to resign because it would lead to civil war," Abdel Jalil said in an interview on the Libya al-Hurra television station.
Abdel Jalil`s remarks come hours after his deputy Abdel Hafiz Ghoga resigned from the council after protesters demanded he step down.
Ghoga, who served as official spokesman for the NTC, had come under increasing opposition from Benghazi residents who accuse him of opportunism because of his belated defection from the Kadhafi regime.
On Thursday he was manhandled by students in Benghazi`s University of Ghar Yunis and had to flee from the fury of the crowd.
On Saturday, protesters also attacked the offices of NTC in Benghazi with home-made grenades, demanding that all the members of the council resign except Abdel Jalil and some other officials, NTC member Fathi Baja told AFP.
