Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A senior Democrat Party official has denied that the ruling party plans to hold an extraordinary congress to remove party chairman Anas Urbaningrum from his post.

"No, no, there is no such plan," Ahmad Mubarok, vice chairman of the Democrat Party`s board of patrons, said here Monday after attending a public discussion on a current discourse to make certain amendments to the Constitution.

He said recent Democrat Party executive board meetings held at Kemayoran and Cikeas were not about a plan to hold an extraordinary congress.

"The meeting in Kemayoran was a routine one. It was continued in Cikeas, also about routine matters. I attended both meetings," he said.

According to Mubarok, the two party executive board meetings discussed efforts to "save" the party but there was no talk about holding an extraordinary congress.

About suspicion of Anas` involvement in the SEA Games athletes` village corruption case currently being investigated by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Mubarok said the party leadership was waiting for the results of the KPK`s probe.

Even if Anas proved to be involved and had been named a suspect in the corruption case, the party would not hold an extraordinary congress because technically such a meeting could be organized only if it was proposed by two-thirds of the party`s regional executive boards.

"What will happen if Anas has been named a suspect is he will have to resign as party chairman," Mibarok said.

"Thereafter, the question of who will replace Anas will be decided by the chairman of the party`s board of patrons, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono," he said.(*)
