The meeting was seen as a follow-up to discussions held by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono with Helen
Clark in April 2011, according to a release from the Indonesian Foreign Ministry made available to Antara here on Saturday.
During the meeting, Marty and Clark also agreed to continue developing the strategic partnership by putting in place development programs in line with Millennium Development Goals (MDG), which have been implemented by UNDP in Indonesia through country program documents, as could be seen in programs focusing on poverty eradication, the environment, climate change, advancement of democracy, and recovery and handling of the economic crisis.
However, Indonesia and UNDP have seen more significant cooperation in supporting poverty eradication programs and achieving other MDGs programs in Indonesia, the minister said.
Marty and Clark also agreed that the objective of the strategic partnership is making maximum use of Indonesia`s potential as a global development partner and in expanding the agenda of development at a global level, as well as within the regions of the world`s developing and least developed countries.
In addition, UNDP`s offer to Indonesia to develop a strategic partnership is based upon reality and international recognition of Indonesian economic development, which remains strong and records continuing growth amidst the ongoing world crisis. Some countries which have developed strategic partnerships with UNDP are Brazil, South Africa, Mexico and Turkey.
This condition, Marty further stressed, would offer more opportunities to Indonesia to continuously contribute to the global
partnership for the sake of the development agenda at the global level, the minister said.
Helen Clark, after being promoted to UNDP administrator in April 2009, was the first woman to hold the prestigious post in the
world financing institution. She is a former Prime Minister of New Zealand who had served her country for three terms from 1999 to 2008. (*)
