Ristiawan made his statement on Saturday, during a coordination meeting regarding the impact of the fuel price hike on gasoline distribution to the public.
The coordination meeting was held with a number of fuel related parties, including the city`s Department of Industry and Trade and Dumai`s regional legislative council commission II officials.
He emphasized that participants in the coordination meeting discussed the fate of many retail fuel dealers who are now prohibited from purchasing subsidized fuel using jerry cans.
This prohibition had been issued by the Governor of Riau, HM Rusli Zainal, who has ordered that the public will no longer be unable to purchase fuel by filling jerry cans at public gas stations.
Further, Dumai`s regional legislative council Commission II member Amris expects to adopt policies and appropriate solutions for retail fuel dealers.
"Because these fuel dealers had expressed their concerns by coming to the council office, now the police and government should address this issue wisely and prudently so that no more of our people suffer due to the price hike," he said
In responding to local legislators, Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Ristiawan is still considering the municipality's recommendation to ban the purchase of fuel by using jerry cans.
"The government`s regulation clearly and unequivocally prohibits the purchase of fuel using jerry cans, and the consequences of this rule must be enforced. However, if the municipality has their own specific policies, they might be justified," he explained.
Meanwhile, the Head of Industry and Trade of the City Dumai, Jamalus, said that Dumai municipal policy will only allow fishermen and farmers to buy fuel contained in jerry cans.
