Probolinggo (ANTARA News) - Indonesia`s largest cellular phone operator PT Telkomsel said modernization of its telecommunications networks in East Java will be finished in two weeks.

The project will be completed before Idul Fitri that the quality of the service would be better, said Galumbang Pasaribu, an official of the subsidiary of PT Telkom, the state telecommunication company.

"Modernization has been in process since December last year and it is now 90 percent completed," Galumbang said here Saturday (July 14).

He said Telkomsel has more than 2,920 units of Base Transceiver Station (BTS) in operation in East Java.

He said the company plans to expand the capacity of its networks before Idul Fitri when demand for the service is expected to surge.

Normally, voice and SMS traffic will double or triple ahead and during Idul Fitri celebrations, he added.

He said East Java branch of Telkomsel could handle 20 million phone calls at once and send 7,750 SMS per second.

He said traditional service - voice and SMS will still continue to dominate traffic ahead and during Idul Fitri though data service also is expected to increase.
