"Indonesia also supports the ongoing democratization process in Myanmar."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia is committed to helping solve the problems faced by Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, according to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

"I have sent a letter to Myanmar President Thein Sein, offering support and encouragement to the local government to solve the conflict," he said in a state of the nation address before the Parliament here on Thursday.

"Indonesia also supports the ongoing democratization process in Myanmar," Yudhoyono added.

Myanmar had been under military rule for almost half a century. However, in the past two years, the country has seen a political transformation, with general elections being held, return of civilian leadership, and pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi`s release from house arrest.

Although doubts about the democratic intentions of Myanmar`s government remain, ASEAN has expressed its support for the new leadership by approving the country`s chairmanship for 2014 - a year before the organization`s target time for its member countries to operate as a single community.
