Bukittinggi (ANTARA News) - The hotel occupancy rate in Bukittinggi city, West Sumatra, has reached 80 percent for this weekend, in light of the Muslim New Year, said Rina, a hotel official, on Friday.

She said that generally, the hotel occupancy rate in the city is around 60 percent, but during this holiday period, it has increased to 80 percent.

"One week before the holiday period, prospective guests began booking hotel rooms to celebrate the Muslim New Year in Bukittinggi," Rina noted.

According to her, most of the hotel guests are from Pekanbaru in Riau, Jambi and Medan.

Furthermore, she pointed out that hotel rooms were booked by locals and tourists from Malaysia and Europe.

Meanwhile, Syafroni Falian, Chairman of the Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI), hoped that hotel managers continue to charge the standard room rate during the holiday period.

He said that room rates in Bukittingi vary, depending on the type of hotel. For instance, a room in a melati-class hotel will cost between Rp200,000 and Rp400,000 (for a night), whereas a room in a star hotel will cost between Rp700,000 and Rp1 million (for a night).

According to him, there are around 52 hotels, with 1,237 rooms in Bukittinggi.
