The number of traffic accidents dropped by 11.5 percent but the number of dead victims increased from 403 in 2011 to 459 in 2012.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A total of 459 people were killed in road accidents across the country during the `Operation Candle` conducted to pacify Christmas Celebrations and New Year`s Eve from December 23, 2012 to January 1, 2013, police said.

"During the Operation Candle in 2011, a total of 2,419 traffic accidents were recorded while in 2012 the number was 2,140 cases, meaning that traffic accident during the operations in 2012 decline by 11.5 percent," Police Spokesman Brig Gen Boy Rafli Amar said here on Wednesday.

He said that the number of traffic accidents dropped by 11.5 percent but the number of dead victims increased from 403 in 2011 to 459 in 2012.

Rafli said that the number of those suffering from serious injuries in 2011 stood at 760 while in 2012 it was recorded at 646, down by 15 percent.

Victims who suffered from minor injuries in 2011 were 2,057 while in 2012 there were 2,277, he said.

Rafli said that during the Christmas and New year`s Eve in 2011 police ticketed 73,074 traffic violators while in 2012 they ticketed 61,246.(*)
