Jakarta (ANTARA News) - National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) head of data, information and public relations Sutopo Purwo Nugroho has stated that at least 33,502 people who were affected by the floods in Jakarta continue to take shelter in evacuation camps.

"Although the floods have subsided, some evacuees are still staying in the camps. As of 8.30pm today, the number of people displaced by the Jakarta floods stands at 33,502," he said here on Tuesday.

"The refugees have come from almost all parts of the city, as well as from Central Jakarta and Thousand Islands," Sutopo noted.

West Jakarta has as many as 24,529 evacuees, followed by North Jakarta (5,040), East Jakarta (3,204) and South Jakarta (729). The floods have claimed 20 lives so far.

"Of the 20 people who died, most were away from the overflowing rivers. The central government, the local government and the business community are now working hand in hand to provide humanitarian aid for the flood victims," Sutopo said.

Previously, incessant downpours in the capital city since January 10 caused major flooding in Jakarta that paralyzed the city.

Floods and torrential water current broke the West Flood Canal levee in the Latuharhary Street, Central Jakarta, and inundated various parts of the city, including the Hotel Indonesia roundabout and the Presidential Palace in Jalan Medan Merdeka Utara.

Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo declared a 10-day emergency alert, from January 17-27. (*)
