"We are committed to handling the water hyacinth problem..."Manado (ANTARA News) - Water hyacinth continues to silt up Lake Tondano in Minahasa District, North Sulawesi, Governor Sinyo Sarudajang said here on Thursday.
Therefore the North Sulawesi governor noted that the provincial government would continue to find the best possible solution to handle the water hyacinth that has covered the surface of the lake.
"We are committed to handling the water hyacinth problem that has contributed to the silting up of the lake," the governor said.
According to him, a team of researchers from Germany would soon come to Manado to do some research on the way how to overcome the hyacinth pollution.
"The team of researchers from Germany will do some research here in an effort to handle the water hyacinth that has polluted Lake Tondano," Governor Sarudajang noted.
"Handling the water hyacinth is our serious concern because it continues to silt up the lake," he went on.
Sarundajang said the team of researchers from Germany will arrive here next week to study to process of turning water hyacinth into biogas to generate electricity.
He added that based on a study in Germany, 200 hectares of water hyacinth could produce one megawatt of electricity.
"The water hyacinth has covered 400 hectare of the lake, and through the cooperation with the German researchers we will produce two megawatt of electricity," Sarundajang said.
