"We enforce the regulation starting Monday (May 20/2013) in effort to support the district government`s mission as a tourist destination," Malang District Head Rendra Kresna said.Malang, E Java (ANTARA News) - Every guest of Malang District Head Rendra Kresna, ranging from officials to ordinary civil servants, have to speak English starting from Monday (May 20) on, according to regulation.
"We enforce the regulation starting Monday (May 20/2013) in effort to support the district government`s mission as a tourist destination," he said here on Tuesday.
However, the guests should not totally use English. It depends on their mastery of English, so they may insert the Indonesian words in speaking, Rendra explained.
According to him, a necessity to speak English by the guests was aimed at making it a habit in effort to be able to speak English fluently.
Rendra, who hasn`t yet mastered English well said further that there should have a spirit to learn English.
The important point is a wish and the use of English can support the district government`s mission to develop the tourism program.
In a bid to improve the civil servants` ability to communicate in English, the Malang District administration had sent them to English course to study twice a week.
In regard with an obligation to speak English at time of meeting with the regent, some local civil servants admitted that it was a positive measure to be able to speak well.
"We are motivated to step up our ability in English to support the tourism programme, because many foreigners including foreign investors always come to Malang," he disclosed.
Malang District is also rich of tourist resorts, including traditional arts.(*)
