Langkat, N Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Police in North Sumatra`s Langkat district captured five inmates who escaped from the Tanjung Gusta correctional institution in Medan following a riot in the prison on Thursday.

"Five of the jail breakers have been captured," Head of the Langkat Police Resort Adjunct Senior Commissioner Eric Bhismo said on Friday.

Four of the five jail breakers were captured when the police conducted a raid on the Medan-Aceh road on Thursday at 08.00 p.m. local time, he said.

They were captured aboard a bus heading for Aceh, he said.

Some of them were sentenced to jail for their part in terrorism, drug abuse and robbery, he said.

The police again captured one jail breaker aboard bus at 01.00 a.m. local time on Friday when they conducted a raid on the road.

"He, along with other bus passengers was going to return home in Pangkalan Susu (Langkat district), " he said.

The police arrested him after he could not show identity card, he said.

At least 150 inmates of the Tanjung Gusta correctional facility escaped after creating rioting in the prison on Thursday.

Head of the correctional institution Muji Raharjo said the prisoners escaped at 18.30 local time after some of the jail breakers set fire on the prison administration office.

Muji said the prisoners also held 15 prison guards hostage before they broke away.

Muji said, according to initial conclusion the rioting began after shortage in water supply as a result of electricity problem in the prison.

The correctional institution had 2,400 inmates before the incident.(*)
