"An instructor reported that the engine of the aircraft failed within 15-16 minutes of its flight," said Chief of Flight Safety of Hang Nadim Airport Indah IrwansyahBatam, Riau Islands (ANTARA News) - Cessna 152, a trainer aircraft owned by Flybest Flying School, fell into Ngenang Island Waters, Riau Islands Province, on Thursday due to engine failure.
"An instructor reported that the engine of the aircraft failed within 15-16 minutes of its flight," said Chief of Flight Safety of Hang Nadim Airport Indah Irwansyah on Thursday.
She added that the Air Traffic Control (ATC) of Hang Nadim Airport subsequently lost contact with Cessna.
The aircraft was controlled by two crews - Lidia Rosa, a flight instructor, and Agus Nabil, a student of the school. Both of them survived the accident.
"Before they took off, an engineer had conducted pre-flight check on the engine and other instruments," said Irwansyah.
The instructor had planned to conduct dual flight exercise from Hang Nadim Airport to Jembatan Lima, Mampang, Nubing, and return to Batam through Jembatan Lima and Tanjunguban.
Flybest Flight School, based in Hang Nadim Airport, has five training aircraft.
Flybest conducts flight exercises every day. The accident has been reported to the National Search and Rescue Agency and the Transportation Safety National Committee (KNKT). (*)
