President Yudhoyono struck a kentongan (wood drum) marking the launch of UN SDSN in the presence of Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Mari Elka Pangestu who is also one of the UN SDSN council`s leaders and UN SDSN director Jaffrey Sachs.
The network is made up of various stakeholders, academics, and representatives of the private sector and non-government organizations. It aims to encourage sustainable economic growth solutions in the country.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon launched UN SDSN on August 9 last year.
Noting that the industrial development has had a side effect on the environment, President Yudhoyono said sustainable development is a must to avoid the destruction of the Earth.
Climate change occurred due to dependence on fossil-based energy, he said.
"We must change this development model. We no longer pursue development which destroys the environment," he said.
Therefore, he hailed the presence of UN SDSN in Indonesia as one of the networks to promote sustainable development.
"I encourage you to develop and continue creative work networks for cooperation among the government, the private sector and non-governmental organizations. I believe that through this creative cooperation we will be able to address the present challenges. And this also ensures that the development agenda will not neglect the interest of anybody," he said.(*)
