Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Floods submerged most of the Kampung Melayu area of East Jakarta, when the people were celebrating Idul Adha on Tuesday.

"The flood water was as high as 30 to 100 centimeters in Kampung Melayu this morning," head of the emergency and logistic division of the Regional Disaster Controlling Agency (BPBD) Iwan Samosir said.

The riverside area has always been the first to fall victim of flooding every year in rainy season in Jakarta.

"The people, however, still chose to stay in their houses. There is no plan for evacuation yet," Iwan said.

The monitoring post of the Public Works service said the water volume at the Katulampa water gate recorded a level of 100 centimeters indicating early sign of danger on Monday evening, but a few hours later the water level dropped to 90 centimeters.

"The river overflowed its banks with big swelling rolling down from the mountain resort area of Puncak in Bogor where heavy rain fell since afternoon on Monday," Iwan said.

At the Depok water gate, the water volume reached a level of 160 centimeters on Monday at midnight.

The West Java governor has passed order to the BPBD and other agencies including the police and military to take preventive measures to cope with the flooding.
