Gen. Djoko Susilo , former chief of police traffic corps.
The high court gave the police general a 18-year jail term or 8 years longer than the verdict of the lower court for corruption in the procurement of driving license simulators worth around Rp180 billion.
The high court verdict on Wednesday was precisely as demanded by the KPK prosecutors in earlier lower court trial.
"The punishment could be a year-end gift after Anti Corruption Day," Bambang Widjojanto, a deputy chairman of the anti graft agency said here on Thursday.
The decision gave a strong signal that the judiciary has shown stronger integrity that could no longer be steered by corrupt people, he said.
"Hopefully the decision would experience a process of mainstreaming to become a general policy in law enforcement trusted by people seeking for justice," he said.
Djoko was also fined Rp1 billion or having an additional jail term of one year and was required to pay Rp32 billion in compensation to the state or facing an additional jail term of 5 years.
KPK has also confiscated a number of Djokos assets includi8ng houses and cars believed to be the result of the corruption. (*)
