The rain-triggered landslide killed a young man in the Semarang district.Semarang, Central Java (ANTARA News) - Parts of Semarang, Central Java Province, is again flooded, with waters at a depth of 30 cm to 80 cm, following incessant heavy rains since Monday.
The downpours triggered the overflow of the citys Eastern Flood Flow Canal in the early hours of Tuesday, inundating nearby residential areas and roads, stated Yanto, a local resident.
Some people, whose houses were submerged by the floods, moved to the Pasar Baru low-cost rental apartment.
Meanwhile, the rain-triggered landslide killed a young man in the Semarang district, on Tuesday morning (Feb. 4).
Tova Adi Saputra (21), from the village of Gombel Lama, was found dead after rocks and mud rolled down the hill hitting and destroying the back of the house where he was sleeping.
Sunardi (45), his uncle, stated that the landslide occurred at 4 a.m. local time.
Four other people including his father, mother, brother and a relative were safe, since they slept in the rooms toward the front of the house, Sunardi explained.
"There was no sign of landslide after two days of rain," he noted.
Last week, 32 families that were displaced by the earlier landslide in Semarang, were resettled in a low-cost apartment in the capital of Central Java province on Thursday (Jan. 30).
The families, along with their belongings were transported to the apartment by dozens of trucks owned by the Indonesian military (TNI) and the Semarang city government.
Commander of the Diponegoro Regional Military Command IV Maj. Gen. Sunindyo and Semarang Mayor Hendrar Prihadi saw the landslide victims off.
The resettlement of the landslide victims was a prompt decision to avoid casualties, he stated, referring to the landslide in Central Javas Kudus district which had claimed 13 lives.
