The regents and the community must reject violence
Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA News) - Security personnel consisting of the National police and army have been asked to be on the alert in the mountain areas of Papua.

The order was given following the shooting incident at Lanny Jaya Police Station, West Papua, on Monday, July 28, which killed two police officers.

"The move is related to the shootout in one of Papuas mountain areas, which killed two police personnel. Officers might get killed if negligent in their duty," said Papua Human Rights spokesperson Frits Ramandey here on Wednesday.

Frits said that regular sporadic attacks were carried out by a group of armed civilians, therefore the officers on duty must remain on guard at all times.

The armed civilian group movement is always moving and aiming to control certain regions and thus going on a shooting spree. The security personal approach pattern may have to be changed in preventing such incidents from re-occurring.

The subdistrict leaders, especially in mountainous areas, along with their communities have also been asked to firmly reprimand the armed civilian group not to indulge in shooting spree.

"The regents and the community must reject violence," Frits said.

If the public and the regents remain silent and do not participate in preventing such incidents, then shooting incidents will continue.

"The public and the military or police will continue to be victims," Frits noted.

The armed civilian group will remain justifying themselves, which also makes them to act freely on their own, and will again attack if they are not reprimanded.

Frits pointed out that the shooting incident in Lanny Jaya Police Station needs to be an evaluation tool of the security personnel in applying the approach pattern.

"It may be necessary to evaluate the proper approach pattern to be used," Frits added.
