At first we felt concerned seeing condition of disaster victims in refugee camps."Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - Students of Yogyakartas Gadjah Mada University have created and developed an easy-to-assemble temporary shelter for disaster emergency purposes made of a cheaper material which is bamboo.
"The temporary shelter developed by the students is named Gadjah Mada Bamboo Shelter or Gambooster, which can be dismantled and reassembled in case needed during emergency following a disaster," said team leader Puji Utomo here Sunday.
Puji said that the Gambooster can be built faster than the regular shelter and also is more practical and economical.
"At first we felt concerned seeing condition of disaster victims in refugee camps. Though many shelters were provided for them by government and private parties, we saw some weaknesses in their development," Puji said.
The regular temporary shelter have many shortcomings such as longer time to build, not practical and not sustainable as they will be just abandoned after they are no longer used.
"Therefore we are trying to create and develop a new one combining smart technology and green technology which is more practical and environmentally friendly," Puji added.
The bamboo used for a Gambooster shelter is Rough Bamboo or Giant Bamboo locals call "Bambu Petung", which is strong and economical in addition to its environmental friendly aspect.
A Gambooster is designed as a 4x6 meter square and 2.5 meter high house, consisting of two bedrooms and a multifunction room. It is also designed able to withstand exposure to rain, wind, and earthquake.
It is built by joining the joints together using bolts and nuts just like making a jigsaw puzzle to become as comfortable for the people to stay as the one known so far.
