Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono officially opened a leadership meeting of the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) at the State Palace here on Tuesday.

The opening ceremony was attended by a number of ministers, legislators, and officials from KPI, the Press Council, and the General Election Commission (KPU).

In his address, President Yudhoyono urged KPI to help promote democracy in Indonesia and be useful to the public.

The head of state appreciated the performance of KPI so far, which has been able to maintain the public broadcasting institution still within the corridor for the sake of public interest.

He said he was aware that the mass media were not fully neutral and independent, but they must not cross the appropriate limits. If that happens, then democracy will be endangered.

KPI is an independent regulatory body founded in 2002, based on the Republic of Indonesia Law No. 32 Year 2002 on Broadcasting. KPIs scope, powers, and duties include regulation of broadcasting organized by the Institute for Public Broadcasting, Private Broadcasting, and Community Broadcasting.
