Indonesian Ambassador to Austria Rachmat Budiman said during the ongoing 58th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna (from September 22-26), that Indonesia has acknowledged the importance of the nuclear technology, so it would develop the required infrastructure for a nuclear power plant.
Representing Indonesia at the IAEA General Conference, Budiman is among the international experts on radioactive wastes to highlight the use of science and technology in developing safe, secure and sustainable solutions for nuclear waste management.
According to an IAEA press release, the nuclear technology is beneficial to many areas, including health, agriculture, power generation and manufacturing.
It stated that the radioactive waste generated by such processes can be safely managed through robust and sustainable approaches, which would pose no risk to the people or the environment, now or in the future.
"It is up to each country to ensure the safe management and disposal of the nuclear wastes. But countries can benefit greatly from each others experiences. Providing a forum on which the countries can exchange experiences and best practices is one of the key roles of the IAEA," said IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano.
Meanwhile, Budiman said in a general debate at the conference that Indonesia had issued its Nuclear Energy Outlook (INEO) in August as one of the national references for the construction of the nuclear energy plant in the country.
He remarked that based on the INEO document, Indonesia has found it necessary to build a nuclear power plant to meet the national energy demand.
Therefore, he added, the government has conducted a comprehensive feasibility study, including a site study at Bangka Island where the nuclear power plant will be built.
